Swiss to hold referendum on Gripen deal

Switzerland looks set to hold a referendum on the proposed sale of 22 Gripen fighter aircraft, built by Swedish manufacturer Saab, the AFP news agency reports.

On Tuesday, opponents of the SEK 23 billion deal presented more than 100,000 signatories to authorities hoping to prompt a referendum on the sale.

Recent polls suggest that a majority of Swiss would vote against the order.

While a non-vote would not halt the deal - the Swiss government signed the deal in 2011, a decision that was approved by parliament last September - it would provoke debate about its financing.
