The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi

Swedish Olympic Committee sponsors to discuss human rights

Sponsors of the Swedish Olympic Committee will meet to discuss negative reports concerning Russian restrictions on local media and the poor working conditions for migrants brought in to build facilities for the games.

Principal sponsors of the Swedish Olympic Committee are Nordea, Vattenfall and ATG. Nordea, which contributes to the guaranteed amount SEK 7.5 million a year to the Swedish athletes, hopes the sponsors will issue a joint statement.

“Can we somehow work together with the Swedish Olympic Committee to affect the International Olympic Committee, by generating some debate on these issues,” says Tomas Björklund , sponsorship manager at Nordea.

A report from the business and human rights NGO, Swedwatch, said the Olympic Games in Sochi have had a negative impact on human rights, mainly the rights of migrant workers in connection to the building of arenas and overall infrastructure.

The Stockholm-based NGO has also criticized Russian authorities for imposing restrictions on the freedom of expression on Sochi-based organizations and media outlets.

Björklund, at Nordea, said that the sponsors should meet together with the Swedish Olympic Committee to discuss the proper way to handle the issue.
