The Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak, who has been in an Eritrean jail for over twelve years now, is still alive, according to the Eritrean ambassador to Israel.

It is the first time in years that a high-ranking Eritrean official talked about Dawit Isaak's situation publicly.

When asked if he personally knows that Isaak is alive, Tesfamariam Tekeste Debbas told Expressen: "This is a personal issue. I cannot tell you about every prisoner but I know that he is Eritrean, he's not Swedish. He comes to Eritrea and he doesn't abide by the rules of the country, he must be punished according to Eritrean rules."
