Pussy Riot visit Stockholm Gay Gala

Two members of the Russian punk protest band Pussy Riot made a surprise appearance at the GayGala in Stockholm on Monday evening, handing out the award "Gay, Bi, Trans of the Year" to footballer Nilla Fischer. High-jumper Emma Green Tregaro, who received international attention for her "nail protest" last summer, was awarded the gala's prize for "Hetero of the year".

In a statement against the new anti-gay-laws in Russia, Green Tregaro painted her nails in rainbow colours, when taking part in the Athletics Championship in Moscow in the summer.

Nilla Fischer for her part was a leading member of the Swedish national football team, which reached the semi-finals in the European Championships in the summer.

Svenska Dagbladet reports that, before handing over the award, the newly released Pussy Riot-member Maria Aljochina told the audience that "we'd love to see this type of thing happen in Russia."

The annual gala gave author Jonas Gardell the award for "Book of the Year" for the second and third part of his trilogy "Never dry tears without gloves". And the Eurovision Song Contest, which last year was hosted by Sweden, was named "TV-programme of the Year".
