New rules to prevent piglets being crushed?

Swedish pig farmers are hoping that new rules may reduce the number of piglets crushed in pigpens by their mothers.

The rules allow some farms to test separating the piglets from the sows with a metal fence, they will do this for three to four days during the farrowing period, in the hope that the fence will prevent the sow from rolling over onto the piglets, news agency TT reports. Previous rules have only allowed the method to be used for a short period with staff present.

Opponents say the method is unethical, according to Swedish Television news.
