Sochi 2014: Day 2

Skiathlon silver for Marcus Hellner

In a finish similar to Saturday's women's skiathlon, Marcus Hellner won an Olympic silver medal in the men's 30 km skiathlon, finishing just 0.04 seconds behind Dario Cologna of Switzerland. Hellner had been overtaken at the top of a long climb but fought back in the final few meters to nearly successfully defend the gold medal he won in Vancouver. Sweden's cross-country team now has two silver medals following Charlotte Kalla's efforts in the 15 km skiathlon on Saturday.

Hellner, a keen poker play renowned as a big day performer, said to AFP that his steady nerves at the card table had helped his preparations.

"In poker you need to keep your line and not reveal your tactics. Since the last Olympics I've been bluffing all the time," said Hellner, who won two golds in Vancouver but went through a lean spell since.
