Both Olsson and Richardsson faced challenges before Friday's race. Richardsson was in a car accident last summer and had his cruciate ligament removed. Olsson has missed out on most of his training in the run-up to the Winter Games due to illnesses and injuries.
Olsson was in the lead for most of the 15-kilometre race, but could not quite keep up with Dario Cologna of Switzerland, who won the gold. Richardsson was off to a slow start, but advanced as the race progressed and ended third, narrowly beating Ilvo Niskanen of Finland.
