New building plans for Älvsjö
The centre-right majority in Stockholm city council have announced plans to build up to 10,000 new apartments and houses south of Älvsjö, in southern Stockholm.
The metro system would also be extended from Hagsätra to Älvsjö to cope with the extra public transport needs, they say. Älvsjö is one of the Stockholm region's most important hubs for commuter trains, but has no metro station nearby.
However, building cannot start quite yet. First officials have to work out how to move the athletic fields currently taking up much of the area in the planned construction area, as well as knocking down oversized motorway ramps in the area, newspaper DN reports.
The politicians hope construction will be completed by 2030.
