Swede killed in Swiss Alps avalanche

A 21-year-old Swedish man was killed on Monday in an avalanche, Swiss authorities said, after he and three friends went off-piste outside the ski resort of Nendaz in southern Switzerland.

According to police in the Swiss canton of Valais, the man was swept up in an afternoon avalanche and thrown against a tree. He was found by his friends and was taken by helicopter to hospital but died of his injuries, news agency TT reports.

The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs has confirmed the death and said the man's relatives have been informed.
