Hockey dreams end in tears for Dam Kronor

Sweden's women hockey players had seemed on course for a bronze medal at the Sochi Games but surrendered a two-goal lead going into the final period as Switzerland went on to win a frantic finish 4-3 on Thursday.

Sweden, the 2006 silver medallists, had controlled the first two periods of the bronze medal play-off, but Switzerland fought back with two goals in the opening six minutes of the last period. The Swiss then added two more before Sweden set up a wild finish with a goal in the closing minute.

The Swedish players were devastated. "It sucks. We have been playing really well through the tournament but we lost all of it in that third period," said Jenni Asserholt to news agency AFP. "It feels really tough to accept. We just messed up."
