Nicklas Bäckström tested positive for doping
Swedish center Nicklas Bäckström of Tre Kronor has failed a doping test according to the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOC). Bäckström did not play the final, where Sweden lost 3-0. He was reportedly out because of a migraine, but the SOC confirms that Bäckström tested positive for banned substances because of an allergy medicine that he has had for seven years.
The Swedish Olympic Committee confirms that Bäckström had high levels of pseudoephedrine in his system when he was tested after the game against Slovenia. Bäckström's allergy medicine, that has been cleared by the International Ice Hockey Federation, is believed to be the cause of the failed doping test.
"I've taken the same medication for years and cleared two tests in the NHL and one by the IIHF this year alone," Bäckström says at a press conference in Sochi.
