Digital TV sacrificed for cell phone coverage

The Swedish government has decided that TV broadcasters will have to give up some of their bandwidth in order to improve the country's cell phone coverage.

Swedish IT Minister Anna-Karin Hatt writes in newspaper Dagens Nyheter today that by earmarking radio frequencies currently used to broadcast digital TV for cellular networks instead, space will be freed up for faster mobile broadband speeds and better cell phone coverage.

The frequency spectrum between 700 and 800 Mhz will be freed up for cell phone use starting April 1st 2017.
