Police shoot man in leg after hours-long standoff

Police shot a mentally ill man in the leg Friday evening during a standoff at a farm outside the northern town of Sollefteå. The 45-year-old man reportedly threatened officers with a weapon and is recovering at a hospital from two gunshot wounds.

News agency TT reports the man had barricaded himself inside the house about noon on Friday. Police said he was armed and officers surrounded the house and tried to talk the suspect down but to no avail.

"At 6:30 p.m., the man came out and threatened police officers at the location with a firearm," said Marcus Grahn, an officer with police in Västernorrland.

Police then fired two shots into the man's thigh and pelvis, dropping him to the ground. The man was was subsequently arrested and taken to hospital in Sollefteå.
