Unique embryo transfer done in Sweden

The Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg has performed Sweden's first ever embryo transfer to a woman with a transplanted uterus, Swedish Radio News reports.

The Swedish medical team transferred embryos to four different women in February, all of whom had undergone successful uterus transplants last year. None of the transfers have yet led to pregnancy, news agency TT reports.

The procedure is part of a project that has been ongoing since 1999, where the women have gotten uterus transplants from their mothers or close relatives and have used their own eggs and their partner's sperm for the embryo transfer.

The only other country to ever perform a successful embryo transfer into a transplanted uterus is Turkey.
