Cleared serial killer may be released

The man once thought to be Sweden's worst serial killer may be released from psychiatric care.

Sture Bergwall, once known as Thomas Quick, confessed to 30 murders and was serving a prison sentence for eight of them. He recently retracted his confessions and was eventually cleared of the killings.

He is currently confined to a secure psychiatric institution for a violent robbery committed in 1990, but the hospital is now looking into forms of open treatment, which could involve him living away from the institution for longer periods.

From the end of january he has been able to leave for up to ten days.He is currently registered as resident with his brother in an area of Jämtland County.
