Long sentences for gang members

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the sentences against members of a criminal network in Södertälje, after an appeals process.

The Supreme Court agreed with the District Court's findings that the criminal network in Södertälje, among other things, has been involved in illegal gambling and extortion, Swedish Television SVT reports. The gang leader, Bernard Khouri, is sentenced to life in prison for conspiracy to murder, kidnapping and blackmail. Another 16 gang members are sentenced to up to 12 years in prison, including charges of murder and accessory to murder.

The Supreme Court upheld most parts of the District Court's judgement from August 2013, which was appealed, resulting in a trial that began in November.

Monday's decision wraps up one of the most extensive and expensive criminal proceedings in Sweden.
