Former prison service manager convicted of bribery

A former senior manager in the prison and probation service has been sentenced to three years in prison for accepting bribes.

According to the prosecution, he and his friend ran a scheme where millions of kroner were paid into an account by construction firms in order to ensure that their firm would get contracts to plan and build prisons in several parts of the country.

The investigation has been going on for four years and some 80 witnesses have been heard during the trial. According to the chief prosecutor this is "The biggest bribery case in Sweden that has lead to trial". The 69-year-old former manager has all along denied any wrongdoing and will appeal the verdict.
