Politician quits after swastika scandal

After being photographed wearing a swastika armband, a top local candidate for the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats has stepped down.

The pictures show Catharina Strandqvist, candidate for the county and municipal councils in Halmstad, cleaning up while wearing a classic Nazi armband.

At first she denied ever having worn it, but later admitted that it was for a burlesque party. She has apologized for the "inappropriate joke", reports news agency TT.

The national press spokesman for the Sweden Democrats says Strandqvist has decided not to run in the election, after a discussion with the party.
