Public transport costs rising faster than ridership

The costs of public transport in Sweden is outstripping the number of passengers who use it, according to a review by the weekly newspaper Dagens Samhälle.

During the past eight years, travel has increased by 20 percent, while costs have grown by 32 percent.

Complicated ticket systems and service disruption for trains are believed to have hindered the number of travelers, according to the paper.

According to the newspaper, the eight largest private players in public transport lost some SEK 58 million last year.
