Tanks could be seen rumbling down the streets of Stockholm on Saturday as part of a military training exercise taking place in the capital.

The military exercise, which began Friday morning and ends Saturday evening, is a preparedness drill, involving personnel from the Life Guards Regiment as well as the Home Guard. Philip Simon, a press officer at the Armed Forces, said there were about 600 people involved.

The purpose of the exercise is to practice the soldiers' ability to protect the nation's capital in a time of crisis. For example, tanks could be seen "guarding" police headquarters on the island of Kungsholmen Saturday afternoon.

According to a press release from the Armed Forces, no streets will be closed but traffic in Stockholm will be affected at certain times.
