Alliance parties want tougher sentencing

In an attempt to put pressure on the government, the four Alliance parties in the opposition presented a battery of proposals for tougher criminal laws. The parties say they are prepared to push their proposals through parliament, even if it turns out the government does not agree with them.

Among the proposals are tougher sentences for violent crimes, rape, trafficking and drug offences. there are also proposals to use electronic tagging over the weekend on 15-18-year-olds who risk becoming criminals, and the option of confiscating the passports to stop Swedes from fighting for terrorist organisations abroad.

Several of the proposals have already been prepared by the Alliance when it was in government, and former justice minister Beatrice Ask, of the conservative Moderate Party, told news agency TT that they can be decided on quickly "if the government wants to and is able to".

The Liberal party's justice spokesperson, Johan Pehrsson, said he thinks the Social Democrats can imagine to vote for several of the proposals, but he is more doubtful that the Social Democrats' coalition partner, the Green Party, would do so.

The new Minister of Justice, Morgan Johansson of the Social Democrat party, told the news agency TT that he sees possibilities to co-operating with the opposition on several of the issues.

"We have to live with the fact that the government does not have a majority, so if we get instructions from the parliament, we will have to take it seriously," he told TT.
