Tourist-bus driver dies in hospital

On Friday night, a driver became the second person to die from injuries sustained in an accident involving a tourist bus headed for a Copenhagen Christmas market.

The bus set out early Thursday morning, picking up passengers from different towns in western Sweden. They were headed for Copenhagen, Denmark for Christmas shopping and were due to return the same evening.

The bus flipped over on a highway and skidded several metres before coming to a halt in a ditch. There were 57 passengers onboard.

Scores were injured in the accident. A woman, 45, died on the scene and the driver, a man in his seventies, was taken to the Sahlgrenska hospital in Gothenburg.

According to Sahlgrenska, the bus driver died late Friday night and his family has been notified.

A total of 14 people were brought to hospital after the accident and eight are still receiving care, but none of them have life-threatening injuries, Swedish Radio’s P4 Sjuhärad station reported Saturday.

The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority examined the crash site Friday and will in the coming week determine whether or not an investigation should be launched.
