New unlawful police register

Police in Västra Götaland and Östergötland counties have wrongfully registered sensitive information about hundreds of people, according to a review by the Commission of Security and Integrity Protection (SIN).

The register contains information on about 180 people, and includes such details as "ethnic origin, political opinions, religious beliefs and health", writes the tabloid newspaper Aftonbladet.

The list contained the names, personal identification numbers and addresses of people in different parts of the country who have been active in protests against the deportations of asylum seekers.

SIN says its criticism is serious, adding on Thursday that the collection of the information by both Västra Götaland and Östergötland occurred "without it being absolutely necessary."
