The court found that the girl died after being beaten by the female defendant. Her husband, who was the girl's uncle and legal guardian, is also found guilty, for not doing anything to stop the beatings.
The couple will now be examined by psychiatrists, to deem their mental health at the time of the killing.
The court found that the woman beat the girl's head, legs, feet, arms, hands and body and that this lead to her death. The man's part in the crime was that he, as the girl's legal guardian, did not protect her from the violence. He did not contact health care services or take the girl to hospital.
During the period that the girl stayed with her relative, the social services were several times alerted to the fact that things were not right in her home. A few weeks before her death, police faxed a report of concern to the social services, but the fax ended up in a PO box and stayed there.
She died from her injuries on the 30th of April this year. She came to Sweden from Gaza alone last year, and went on to live with the couple. Her parents remain abroad.
The couple will remain in custody until the end of January, when the terms of their sentence will be decided.
