Couple appeal child death convictions

A couple convicted of causing the death of an eight-year-old girl called Yara are to appeal against their convictions, Swedish Radio in Blekinge reports.

They were the girl's guardians. The woman was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, while the woman's husband - and the girl's uncle - was sentenced to six years in prison for not doing anything to prevent it from happening.

The woman's lawyer wants the National Board of Health and Welfare's Legal Advisory Board to determine more specifically when the child died and when she sustained her injuries. The man's lawyer says his client did not know what his wife was doing to the child, and is therefore innocent.

The girl came to Sweden from Gaza alone in 2013, and went on to live with the couple. Her parents remain abroad. She was found dead in April last year, it is thought she died after being repeatedly hit by - among others - a rolling pin.
