Ebba Busch Thor has called for what she calls Vision Zero for abortions in Sweden, that is, a goal that zero abortions be carried out here. To that end she is supporting preventative measures, and she tells Swedish Radio that free contraceptives for the young might be a way to do so. She was speaking live in a morning program from the Swedish Radio stage at the Almedalen park.
She emphasized that she does not want to infringe on abortion rights and that she supports Swedish abortion laws, which stipulate that pregnancy can be legally terminated up to the 22nd week.
Since the northern county of Norrbotten introduced such a system in 2012, the number of abortions there has halved.
Isn't this an unusual position for a Christian Democrat? We put the question to Felicia Ferreira, editor-in-chief of the Christian publication Dagen, which is hosting a debate in Almedalen today on the topic of a Vision Zero approach to abortion.
"Christian Democrats all over Sweden have been discussing this issue," she tells us. "But it is unusual that a politician in Sweden is talking about this topic at all."
The Christian Democrat leader also said she plans to take part in Stockholm Pride, but will not be in the Pride parade. “I won’t be in the parade, but I will be there,” she said. “It’s important for our party to work so that everyone, no matter what group they belong to, will feel safe in Sweden.” Her predecessor Göran Hägglund had refused to take part in Pride.
