Warm weather also means tragedies in the water

With the arrival of high summer weather in Sweden, several people have died from drowning in recent days.

The Swedish Life Saving Society is warning people here not to over-estimate their swimming ability.

The Nordic definition of being able to swim is jumping in the water and swimming 200 meters in open water. But, the society tells the TT news agency, being able to swim 200 meters back and forth in a pool is far different from handling the same distance in open water.

“Research in Norway has shown that swimming 200 meters indoors corresponds to about 20 meters outdoors in 16 degree water,” says the society’s Anders Wernesten.
