Memorial fund honouring Malik Bendjelloul set up

A memorial fund in the name of Academy Award-winning documentary director Malik Bendjelloul will help young filmmakers get a head start in their careers.

Bendjelloul won an Oscar for his 2012 film Searching for Sugarman, about a forgotten Detroit folk musician named Sixto Rodriguez.

Bendjelloul died in May 2014 in Stockholm at the age of 36. The memorial fund set up in his name will help young filmmakers launch projects inspired by the late director's creativity and knack for storytelling, Swedish Radio's culture department reports.

A foundation will be officially set up on September 14th, Bendjelloul's birthday.
