Jessica Ohlson new leader of Sweden Democrat youth wing

The youth-wing of the Sweden Democrat party has elected Jessica Ohlson as its new leader. Ohlson taking over could mean that the mother party will cut its ties with the youth wing, Swedish Radio News reports.

Ohlson represents a group within the Sweden Democrats' youth wing that wants to take the party in a more nationalistic direction, which the party board of the Sweden Democrats is opposed to.

Both the leader of the mother party, Jimmie Åkesson, and party secretary Richard Jomshof have said that the youth wing may have to break off from the mother party should Ohlson be elected as its new leader.

"If Ohlsson is elected we will call her to a meeting to discuss how our organisations can go our separate ways in a structured way and without making a mess," Jomshof said in an interview with SD-Kuriren, the party's own magazine.

Earlier this year, The Sweden Democrats' party members' committee decided to expel two of the leaders of the youth wing, William Hahne and Gustav Kasselstrand,  for collaborating with far-right parties abroad and undermining the Sweden Democrat Party's zero-tolerance policy on extremism.
