New Karolinska more expensive than world's tallest building

The new Karolinska hospital in Stockholm will cost almost double as much as the world's tallest building, Dubai's Burj Khalifa, according to daily Svenska Dagbladet.

The 828-meter-tall Burj Khalifa was inaugurated in 2010 at a cost of $1.5 billion, the equivalent of SEK 13.2 billion today. The new Karolinska will cost SEK 22.8 billion, which is 1.7 times more than the Middle Eastern building.

The newspaper also compared the new hospital with one of Sweden's most famous modern buildings, Santiago Calatrava's Turning Torso in Malmö, which is Europe's third tallest apartment building and cost 13 times less than the hospital.
