Harsh weather mars winter break in Sweden

Tough road conditions could pose problems for Swedes travelling during the ongoing winter break as large parts of the country are affected by heavy snowfall, sleet and rain.

Families driving to or from the ski resorts in Sweden's northern mountain region risk complicated road conditions this weekend, with the Swedish Transport Administration warning of slippery roads.

"You have to adjust to the road conditions regardless of the weather prognosis. Treacherously icy conditions can appear in just five seconds' time," the Administration’s press service told news agency TT.

Sleet was predicted across southern Sweden on Saturday morning, with between 2 and 4 centimetres of snow expected to fall before 4 p.m. "After that there will be scattered showers in the south," meteorologist Emilie Hörnqvist told TT.

Parts of the north will get up to 10 centimetres of snow but no rain. "The snow will continue to fall on Saturday night and won't stop until Sunday afternoon," said Hörnqvist.
