War crimes suspect held in custody
A man charged with war crimes is to be held in custody while a prosecutor carries out an investigation.
The man is reported to be from Syria and fought on the side of the Assad regime, which is blamed for most of the deaths in a civil war that has killed a quarter of a million people.
Swedish police suspect the 32-year-old with probable cause. They arrested him on Tuesday. The decision on Thursday by a court to remand the man in custody means the prosecutor's case is seen as strong.
The suspect's lawyer says he denies the charges, and will not say during which period he fought for the regime.
Pictures on social media are reported by Swedish Radio News to form the basis for the case. They supposedly show the suspect carrying out acts in 2014 or 2015, which a prosecutor sees as breaking human rights, or constituting war crimes.
The man sought asylum in Sweden in July 2015.
Prosecutor Hanna Lemoine says they invite people who have evidence in this case to come forward and contact the International Prosecutor's Chamber in Stockholm.
