Sweden revving for right to snowmobile in Norway

Norwegian snowmobilers can drive freely across the border to Sweden, but snowmobiling Swedes lack the same privileged on Norwegian soil. Swedish authorities are hoping to change this.

The Swedish Transport Agency together with the Industry Ministry is working with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to reach an agreement.

"Work is under way at the ministry level," Olof Stenlund, an investigator at the Swedish Transport Agency, told Swedish Radio's local channel in Jämtland.

Officials are trying to find a way for both countries to mutually agree on the needed qualifications to drive a snowmobile on the neighboring country's side of the border, Stenlund said. He added it is unclear when a solution may be reached.

In the meantime, Swedes can apply for an exemption to drive a snowmobile in Norway with the National Roads Administration's regional office. This applies to reindeer owners in border regions and employees of county administrative boards.
