A Canadian company has received permission to look for uranium in Sweden’s northern mountains. But a group of members of parliament at the recent Nordic Council meeting have sent a letter to the Swedish government questioning the reasons behind the decision.
Those involved belong to the council’s leftist and environmentalist caucus. Besides expressing concern over the health and environmental risks of mining uranium, they ask what any ore would be used for?
Officially nuclear power is being phased out here, and Sweden is a strong supporter of nuclear weapons disarmament.
