Few Non-native Swedes Join Police

Despite heavy recruitment efforts, few non-Europeans are showing interest in joining Sweden’s police forces.

Marie Andersson, the head of recruitment at the National Police Board, says this is a problem because police forces should represent Swedish society.

Andersson points out that though there are many immigrants from Africa and South America living in Sweden, there are very few police officers from those regions.

From the 408 people who were accepted to Sweden’s Police Academies, only some 70 had a different cultural or ethnic background other than Swedish.

Though there has been a 2% increase of non-native Swedes being accepted to the Academy since last year, the majority of those applying and taken in have European background.
