A mosque in the city of Örebro has been largely destroyed by a fire, which police are treating as suspicious.

The building in Vivalla was a sunni religious centre. The foundation says on its website it was visited by thousands per month, including people from 25 nationalities.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze about 2 am on Tuesday.

Kenneth Johannesson of the Bergslagen police says to news agency TT that a building like this should not catch fire and so they are treating it as arson.

This mosque survived an arson attack in 2014 when someone threw a suspected molotov cocktail in a window, which failed to catch fire.
