Doctors join calls to end sex abuse

Sweden's doctors have become the latest in a succession of professions to urge an end to sexual abuse, in a move prompted by the #metoo campaign.

Under the hashtag #utantystnadsplikt, (not bound by silence), some 10,400 female doctors and medical students have signed a petition against sex abuse in hospitals and clinics by senior doctors and patients.

Not all those who have signed the petition have been victims of abuse.

"Just like the rest of society, female doctors are exposed to these situations," Heidi Stensmyren, president of the Swedish Medical Association told Swedish Radio news.

"This is not about different professional groups. It's about power," she added.

This is the largest protest linked to the #metoo campaign to date, and follows similar petitions published by a wide variety of professions including lawyers, politicians, academics, the emergency services, actors, and singers.
