The Swedish contraceptive app that's as effective as the pill

4:06 min

As more women opt out from using hormonal contraception, a Swedish particle physicist has come up with an app that studies show has the same success as the pill, without the potentially harmful side effects.

Elina Berglund Scherwitzl, who helped discover the Higgs boson particle, is co-founder of Natural Cycles, a contraceptive smartphone app that calculates daily fertility rates with an algorithm.

I feel that it's important to increase contraceptive choice. It's clear that one method does not fit all women and many women do feel side effects from hormonal contraception. We want to provide an alternative."

This year, Natural Cycles became the first app in the world to be approved as a contraceptive. Twenty percent of its subscribers use it as a means to plan a pregnancy.
