Did the Netherlands give IKEA unfair tax advantage? Credit: Jens Meyer/TT

EU commission investigates IKEA for tax avoidance

1:50 min

The Swedish furniture giant IKEA is accused of cutting deals with the Netherlands to avoid paying up to one billion Euros in taxes, and is now being investigated.

The EU commission will look into whether two separate tax rulings in the Netherlands "may have allowed" Ikea's Dutch based unit "to pay less tax, and given them an unfair advantage compared to other companies subject to the same taxation rules".

In a statement, IKEA insists that its tax deals in the Netherlands did not breach EU laws.
