Call to impose Swedish liquor laws on cruises

2:26 min

The number of sexual harassment cases on Swedish cruises and ferries has not gone down, despite efforts to clamp down on assaults. Now, Swedish police want to restrict the onboard sale of alcohol.

Olof Bratthall of the Stockholm police says there is a link between the large amounts of alcohol served on cruises and incidents of violence, harassment and rape.

"This involves great suffering for the victims and great costs for society," says Bratthall

However, Pia Berglund of the Swedish Shipowners' Association says shipping companies have already taken a number of measures to increase security for passengers, including by limiting alcohol sales to certain hours, and that it would be preferable to regulate the industry at the EU level.
