Sweden not happy about Security Council meeting on Iran

1:16 min

Sweden expressed reservations about the "format and timing" of a meeting in the UN security council on Friday in response to the violent crackdown against protesters in Iran.

The extra Security Council meeting on Friday had been called by the US administration.

Several countries present at the meeting seemed to fear that the outspoken US criticism was a pretext to undermine the Iran nuclear deal.

While condemning "the excessive use of violence" in Iran, Sweden's representative to the UN said that "human rights violations in Iran must be separated from [the Iran nuclear deal].

On Monday, the Swedish Foreign Ministry declined to comment to Radio Sweden, referring to the Foreign Minister's earlier condemnations of the developments in Iran.
