Environmental impact of recycled garments varies

5:52 min

Recycled clothing was announced this week to be the Christmas Gift of the Year, but from an environmental standpoint, is all recycled clothing created equal?

The answer is no. Radio Sweden interviewed Dr. Sandra Roos, who studies the environmental impact that clothing makes throughout its life cycle, to find out how shoppers can compare the impact of garments made from recycled plastic bottles, garments fashioned out of worn out clothes, and second-hand clothes.

Ultimately, though, she says it's important to only buy what you really like.

"Because if you have this garment and you like it, you will not buy any other new garments. So, the main purpose is always to reduce the purchase or the production of new garments,"
