January sees record number of Brits seeking Swedish citizenship

6:24 min

A record number of Brits, 471, applied for Swedish citizenship this January.

Applications from British nationals began to increase straight after the UK voted to withdraw from the EU in June 2016, but never before have so many applied in a single month.

For British nationals, just like with all non-Scandinavian citizens, you need to have lived in Sweden for five years before you are eligible to apply. Or, if you have been married to, or co-habited with a Swede for at least two years, you can apply already after three years.

Radio Sweden spoke with two Brits who recently applied for citizenship to hear what was behind their decision.
