Malmö's European adventure comes to an end

Malmö FF's European adventure came to an end at Stamford Bridge, Thursday, as the Swedes lost 3-0 against Chelsea, who go on to the quarter-finals of the Europa League 5-1 on aggregate.

Malmö's manager Uwe Rösler, whose players are still in pre-season, said he was "proud" of his team's performance despite the result.

The Swedes had started strongly looking for an away goal that would get them back into the tie with veteran striker Markus Rosenberg having his side's best opportunity.

But after defender Rasmus Bengtsson's second-half dismissal, Chelsea stamped their authority on the game with goals from Oliver Giroud, Ross Barkley and young Callum Hudson Odoi.

Malmö's travelling contingent of 3,500 fans was praised in the English media for its loud, vocal and colourful backing and although the Skåne team's Europa League journey is at an end, the club has banked around 80 million kronor from its cup run which will put it in a strong position going into the new Swedish football season and the chance to reclaim the Allsvenskan title from Stockholm rivals AIK.
