Löfven and Putin to meet one-on-one in Russia

3:08 min

Prime Minister Stefan Löfven meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time on Tuesday.

The two leaders are attending the International Arctic Forum in St. Petersburg, a conference where nations bordering the region discuss its potential development.

Swedish-Russian relations have been strained for some years now. Russian military planes have violated Swedish airspace on more than one occasion and Sweden has condemned Russian actions in Crimea and eastern Ukraine.

Gregory Simons, a researcher at the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Uppsala University, says the history between the two countries has to be taken into account, and expected Löfven to use a two-pronged approach with Putin during his meeting.
