Government will support Stockholm-Åre's 2026 Olympic bid

Sports Minister Amanda Lind says the government will pledge its support for the country's bid to host the 2026 Olympic Games in Stockholm-Åre.

Lind told broadcaster TV4 it would be fantastic if Sweden got the games. She said it would allow Sweden's Olympic Committee to prove they can organise and host such a big event, in a climate-smart way, as well as lay the foundation for future events in Sweden.

However, Christian Ekström from the Swedish Taxpayers Association said he thought the news was regrettable since he suspects the taxpayers would inevitably end up footing the bill.

The International Olympic Committee will decide whether the game will be held in Stockholm-Åre or Milano-Cortina in Italy on June 24.
