Survey finds record levels of Swedish support for EU

4:27 min

Swedes are more positive than ever before towards the EU and they're some of the most certain, when compared to the rest of Europe, that they want to remain a member.

The figures come from the annual SOM-survey, which goes out to 21,000 randomly selected Swedes in different age groups in different parts of the country.

Today, almost 6 out of ten Swedes say they are in favour of Swedish membership. And 7 out of ten think that Sweden leaving the European Union is a bad idea. Only around 1 in 6 are in favour of giving up membership.

That's a big change compared to when the SOM-institute started measuring attitudes to the EU, in the early 1990s, when a majority of Swedes were negative towards membership.
