Sweden will contribute six helicopters to the new European Union-level civilian protection operation where member states pool together resources that can be used when disasters strike.

The project, called rescEU, is co-financed by the EU and hopes to strengthen Europe's emergency response capacities to events like wildfires, floods or disease outbreaks.

Sweden is the first member state to formally pledge aid to the program, putting forward six helicopters that can be called upon to help.

Interior Minister Mikael Damberg, who announced the news on Friday, says the country wants to give back after it received European help last year to it struggled to contain a number of forest fires.
