Steady disappearance of women's football teams in Sweden

Women's football is enjoying a surge in popularity with the 2019 World Cup in France. But while Sweden remains a leading nation on the international stage, the game back home is fading.

Malin Rimfors, a reporter at Swedish Radio's sports department, tells Radio Sweden that there has been a steady decline in the number of ladies football teams in the past decade.

"I asked a lot of local districts to compare how many teams they had in 2009 compared to today and found that one in five teams or sometimes more have disappeared over the past ten years. So there has been a big decrease in the number of players and the number of teams," she says.
