Free newspaper Metro shutting down, sources say

1:04 min

Staff at Metro say they were told on Friday that production would stop at the free daily newspaper.

An official announcement about the closure was expected on Monday, reports Swedish Television's culture desk.

However Ulrika Hyllert, head of Sweden's journalist union, tells Swedish Radio that the union and newsroom staff haven't been informed about any shut down.

Metro, which is free of charge and can be picked up at Sweden's bus stops, convenience stores and subway stations, was once a leading media brand, boasting it was the most read newspaper in Sweden. In recent years, though, Metro has run into financial trouble.
